Spinal Manipulation

A spinal adjustment, also known as "chiropractic adjustment" is a safe, natural, noninvasive procedure in which trained  chiropractors will use their hands or a small instrument to apply a controlled, sudden force to a spinal joint.  The goal of this procedure is to improve spinal motion and improve your body's posture and physical function.

What does spinal manipulation do?

The intention of a chiropractic adjustment is to affect or correct the alignment, motion and/or function of a vertebral joint.  Specifically, they are intended to correct "vertebral subluxations" which are abnormal alignments of vertebrae.

How do I know if my back needs adjusting?

Possible signs that your spine is out of alignment include:

  1. headaches
  2. neck pain
  3. lower back pain
  4. hip pain
  5. shooting pain in limbs
  6. sciatic pain
  7. knee pain
  8. leg pain
  9. pain when stepping or climbing stairs
  10. frequent illnesses
  11. excessive or easy fatigue
  12. numbness or tingling in the hands or feet

What happens when your spine is adjusted?

The effects of spinal manipulation have been shown to include relief of musculoskeletal pain, increased range of joint motion, relief from nerve impingement, improved posture and improved facet joint kinematics.

How should you sleep after a chiropractic adjustment?

It is recommended to sleep on a firmer mattress and choose a pillow that supports the head so that your entire spine is in a neutral position.  Use a thinner (2" - 3" height maximum) pillow if you are sleeping face up.  If you are sleeping on your side, use a thicker pillow to accommodate for shoulder width.  To help alleviate back and hip pain, you may also want to use a pillow between your knees when sleeping on your side.  It is recommended to avoid sleeping on your stomach as the head is turned and will cause undue and prolonged stress on your neck.

What is accelerated vibration therapy (AVT)?

Accelerated vibration therapy is used to strengthen your body without the wear and tear on your joints as often occcurs with traditional exercising.  AVT is proven to increase flexibility, balance, proprioception and range of motion.  Other benefits include muscle strength, bone strength, improved circulation and elevated mood.
